Sala Kryszek Art & Writing Competition 2018 PROMPT
To thoughtfully respond to the prompt, carefully consider the following: Sala Sarna Kryszek was born in Warta, Poland, a small town where Jews and non-Jews lived before the Second World War. When the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939, they implemented hundreds of antisemitic laws that had already been passed in Germany. These laws restricted the freedoms of the Polish people and, in particular, the freedoms of Polish Jews. Sala was among the 40,000 Jews who were deported by the Nazis from their hometowns to the Lodz Ghetto. Between 1941 and 1942, hundreds of thousands of Jews, including Sala, were deported from ghettoes to killing camps, concentration camps, and forced labor camps.

Looking at the antisemitic laws passed by the Nazis is one way to see the process of gradual dehumanization that made it possible for the Nazis to forcibly separate entire towns and families.

The Prompt
Consider the content of the antisemitic laws passed by the Nazis and the history of deportation during the Holocaust, and create a piece of writing or a work of visual art that examines the role of authority from the perspectives of both Jews and their non-Jewish neighbors during the Holocaust. Entries must be received by: Monday, April 9th, 2018

Service-
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., National Day of Service:
Errol Heights Natural Area (Inner SE Portland)
Saturday, January 20, 9:00 AM-noon
The National Day of Service is officially January 15, but we feel that every day is a good day to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his work to advance civil rights! Join Portland Parks & Recreation, Hands on Portland, Johnson Creek Watershed Council and the Friends of Errol Heights to complete important ecological enhancement projects at this little gem of a Park. We’ll have some interactive ways for you to share with others (if you wish) why you are inspired by Dr. King, or why you serve your community through volunteering. We will be planting native trees, shrubs and plants to provide habitat for insects, birds and other animals, but also beauty and better air quality for the neighborhood and Park visitors. No experience necessary! Wear long thick pants, a long-sleeved shirt and sturdy shoes. Bring a water bottle, rain gear, warm clothes and a sunhat. Instruction, tools, gloves, water, coffee/tea and snacks provided. If you have rubber boots, please bring them. We will also have multiple sizes available to borrow.
Meet at: SE 52nd & SE Tenino Dr.
RSVP to Johnson Creek Watershed Council: courtney@jcwc.org
